New Germany Elementary’s Presentation

for Internet Safety

It is as imperative to teach on-line safety in today’s world as it is to teach a child how to cross the street safely. The neighborhood for today’s youth is no longer the diminutive controlled area that it once was. Now, due to the world wide web, the world itself is every child’s playground.

STAGE 1      Online Safety

In 2004 - 05 three classes in our school chose to do a week of on-line safety activities and then share those with members of our school family and the larger community as well. The grade 4/5 class made posters of five basic on-line safety rules and groups of children visited each classroom to explain these rules, and the importance of following them, to the students. Following a brainstorming session a second class of 5/6 students wrote several pieces of poetry about on-line safety. They memorized one of the poems to do as a choral speaking piece. They then visited classrooms to share their poem and to further enhance the message. The grade 4 class opted to do a power point presentation on the safety issues surrounding the internet and to share that with the students, parents and community. These projects are displayed on our website to reach more people.

In conjunction with the RCMP, laminated papers with safety rules were distributed to the grade six students.  Besides teaching bike and water safety to our students we have now developed an on-line safety message as well. After all, we want our children to play safely.

STAGE 2     Safe Surfing

During 2005 - 06, four classrooms designed a Safe Surfing Week program.  Building on 2005, the teachers/students began to gauge the success of the previous year.  This is the second year of a three-year program designed to promote on-line safety.  Mr. Brody Cannon (Gr. 4/5), Ms. Peta Wagner (Gr. 4), Ms. Kristy Lynds (Gr. 1) and Ms. Dawn Henderson (Gr. 5/6) spent many hours preparing this years’ teaching tool as well as a power point presentation showing the preparation, skits, surveys and puppet shows as part of the safe surfing week activities.

The following poems were written by individuals in the grade 5/6 class.  As well, there is a class poem near the bottom of the page.

Grade 4/5 class worked in groups of five to create internet safety posters for the Primary-Three classrooms at New Germany Elementary.  Each group visited one classroom to do a presentation of these rules.  The posters were left in the classrooms to be posted up near the class computer.  The following are samples of the posters and rules.  (To see a larger view click on the photo).

The five basic rules covered dealt with web cams, picture sending, chatrooms, answering emails and downloading rules.

INTERNET SAFETY   by Courtney W.
When it comes to internet safety,
You know what must be done
Be careful now, and remember this,
And you will start having fun.

When someone asks you for your name,
Address or telephone number,
Don’t tell them that, just click right off,
And tell someone like your mother.

 Internet Safety    by Alisa B.
When you go on the internet there are some rules
They really are very useful tools.
You can think that someone is your friend
But they could just pretend.

When you meet someone on the net,
It's okay, if it is a friend,
But if they ask where you live
Just say.... I can't tell.

Internet safety is the way to go
Be careful when you punch in that code
Always be safe and always be good
Enjoy the internet the way you should.

Internet    by Patrick

The web is not a toy

So if you don’t know

Who you are talking to

Keep your info to yourself.

Phone numbers

Credit card numbers and

Your name and address too

Should be kept inside of you.

Internet Safety  by Brandon A.

Internet safety really is

The best thing in the world.

If someone asks for your number

Say NO and tell someone. Like your mother.

  Internet safety really is

The best thing in the world!

Don’t stop playing, just be aware

And be careful what you do.

Never give credit card numbers

Be sure not to give your name

Keep your personal info

Right inside of your head

Because if you give it out

You could end up dead.

 Internet Safety  by Jordin W.

Games, music and the net

Computers can be fun

But if you’re not safe

It could become one big mistake.

The NET is useful but dangerous

Unless you are careful and

Don’t give out personal info!

Internet safety is a good thing

A good thing to think about,

No matter what you do,

Do not give out information to strangers,

Strangers could pretend to be young

But really be an adult,

Use the internet wisely

So you can have fun and be safe.

Internet Safety by Marty N.

Don’t give codes

That can be bad

You will then be very sad

With the consequences

Here’s an internet safety tip

Don’t give information to strangers

So you can stay safe

And have fun.

Don’t go the internet

And take up some bad things.

There’s better things to do in life

Like buy a brand new pet.

So don’t give a stranger

Your phone number, name or address

Or you will get the blame

If something happens.

Internet Safety  by Jordan M-T.

Internet safety is really cool

Although not showing your face can make you drool

It's O.K. to talk when you know it's a friend

But it's not when someone only wants to pretend

So watch who you talk to

Do not be a fool.

The internet is full of fun and games but watch out for people you don't know or you will never be the same. If you are talking to someone and they ask to meet with you, tell your parents. The internet is dangerous, a lot of people go missing because they went and met someone from the net.

If you don't know what to do, tell your parents or the police. The person will be arrested and won't be released.  Do your best!  Enjoy the web but remember this quote:  Life is too short to put your life on line.

Internet Safety  by Tyler D. &   Billy C.

Now that the school work is done

And the kids have free time

Many will spend it on line.

Safety's an issue we need to teach

So kids can learn and be safe at the beach

Never give personal info away

Stay safe on the internet and you can play.

Internet Safety  by 5/6 class

We have some special rules for you,

To use when you go online,

Don’t give out information because

You may become part of a crime.

Someone that could hurt you

May be lurking around,

Waiting silently in the sites you visit,

When your parents aren’t around.

No name, address or school info

Should be shared online,

Because strangers may be looking

For just the right sign.

If you receive something

That makes you feel uneasy,

Please tell a trusted adult

Do not open it or explore it.

It’s not a good idea

To meet online friends,

But if the notion

Is lodged in your head,

Then please, tell a parent

And go with them instead.

Passwords are your property,

And should only be shared

With a trusted adult,

Who lives with you and cares.

Help your family establish

The internet rules at home.

Then together discuss them

So the entire household knows.

That it’s okay to surf the web

And enjoy the interesting sites,

BUT follow the rules…

To keep everything right.
